RENOVATION OF URKIDE SCHOOL
Vitoria-Gasteiz. 2003/2004

The school is currently organized into two volumes: the main building, catalogued in the architectural heritage of Vitoria, thus unalterable, and a second adjoining building.

The intervention proposes an extension of the adjoining building and a strategy to unify its image. By means of a camouflaging operation, a new hanging glass shell is introduced to surround both parts.

This shell adapts to the different façades, allowing the presence of windows (new and old), hiding nuclei for circulation, etc.

A large, projecting glass panel hides a sequence of stairs that go directly to the play area.

The resulting glass prism stands out against the old building, making the entirety of the buildings more modern.

Interiors are governed by criteria of maximal economizing and easy maintenance, as correspond to these kinds of centres.

A sports complex built under the patio completes the intervention.
